The Hazardous Substance Research Center/South & Southwest sponsored a workshop October 25-26 on "Fundamental Research of Mercury Contamination: Transferring Technology to Develop Solutions." The workshop took place at the Skidaway Institute of Oceanography on scenic Skidaway Island near Savannah, Georgia.

This workshop was convened to bring together potential partners to share knowledge regarding the development of mercury remediation strategies for contaminated environments. Potential partners included experts/representatives from the research community, concerned industries, and regulatory agencies.

The purpose of the workshop was to address the following objectives with regard to mercury contamination:

  • Evaluate real-world problems at a number of contaminated sites
  • Review how clean-up decisions are made
  • Identify/discuss major data gaps that limit development of remediation solutions
