In laboratory experiments, the energy cost for removing contaminants by this method was about $2 per ton of contaminant removed. Total treatment costs, which may be as much as ten times the cost of energy, could be $20 to $30 ton. Still, this compares favorably with conventional methods, such as encapsulating old waste sites, which are in the range of $150 per ton of contaminated soil.
